Fish Status |
Poor | Although abundant, the bluegill population size structure is poor. The majority of Bluegill collected during surveys are between 4 and 6 inches.
Fair | A small number of Channel Catfish have been collected during past surveys.
Very Good | Green Wing Lake possesses a quality Crappie fishery with both Black and White Crappie present. Several Crappie were collected during the 2023 electrofishing survey in the 9 to 10 inch range. During past years, targeted Crappie trap net surveys have yielded good numbers of eater-size crappie in the 8 to 12 inch range.
Very Good | Green Wing Lake harbors a quality bass fishery with good numbers of quality fish present. During the 2023 electrofishing survey, Largemouth Bass were captured at a rate of 93/hour, well above the management goal of 60/hour. Of the bass collected, 52% were over 15 inches and 26% were over 18 inches. Bass over 7 lbs. have been collected during prior surveys.
Good | Saugeye have been stocked in Green Wing Lake since 2021, before which Walleye were stocked from 2002 to 2020. Saugeye and Walleye are generally captured in low numbers during electrofishing surveys. However, anglers have reported catches of several legal-size (>14") Saugeye and Walleye, suggesting that annual stockings are supporting a decent fishery.
Location: Pyramid State Park is located south of Pinckneyville in Perry County. The Denmark Section is accessed off Pyatt-Cutler Road. From State Route 127, head west on Pyatt-Cutler Road. About 7 miles west of Pyramid State Park, turn south into the Denmark Section.
Description: Green Wing Lake is a strip cut lake located on the Denmark Section of Pyramid State Park. Facilities at this 40-acre lake include a concrete boat launch, floating dock, and bathrooms.
History and Status of the Sport Fishery: A multi-gear fish community survey is completed on Green Wing Lake on a biennial basis. Additional targeted surveys (single-species) are also completed as needed. The lake supports good fisheries for Largemouth Bass and Crappie. Based on survey data, Saugeye/Walleye abundance is lower than the management goal, possibly due to escapement into the adjacent Pipestone Creek. However, angler reports indicate there are still sufficient numbers of Saugeye and Walleye to support a fishery.
Additional Lake Information: Note: There is no motor HP limit, however all boats must be operated at no-wake speed.
