Excellent | In 2021 Bluegill were collected at a rate of 260 fish per hour of electrofishing. Bluegill ranged from 3.1-8.3”. 93.7% of the catchable Bluegill population exceeded 7” and 51.6% exceeded 8”. The Bluegill in Ashland Old Reservoir are in great body condition (Wr = 104.9 in 2021). In 2018, 26.6% of the catchable Bluegill population exceeded 7” and 12.2% exceeded 8”. The current Bluegill/Redear Sunfish regulation is 10 fish/day. This quality Bluegill fishery should provide anglers with excellent fishing opportunities for years to come. | |
Average | One Channel Catfish was collected during the 2021 survey. This fish measured 11.9”. No Channel Catfish were collected during the 2018 survey. IDNR will continue to stock non-vulnerable Channel Catfish biennially, or as State Hatchery production allows, to maintain angling opportunities for this species. | |
Average | The 2021 electrofishing survey yielded 168 Largemouth Bass per hour of electrofishing. Fish ranged from 5.8-13.7” and weighed up to 1.22lbs. In 2018, Largemouth Bass were collected at a rate of 274 fish/hour with fish measuring 4.6-19.6” and weighing up to 4.12lbs. The Largemouth Bass population is doing well as far as quantity, but not quality. There are numerous bass in the pond as indicated by the high catch rates and the low body condition values. While this population structure is not ideal for a trophy bass pond, it is ideal for a quality Bluegill pond. The current Largemouth Bass regulation is the state-wide regulation of 6 bass/day with no minimum length limit. | |
Good | Redear Sunfish were collected at a rate of 16 fish per hour during the 2021 electrofishing survey. These fish ranged from 8.0-9.0”. In 2018, Redear Sunfish were sampled at a rate of 17 fish per hour, ranging from 7-10". The Redear Sunfish population looks to be healthy, however a higher catch rate is desired. | |
Location:
Ashland Reservoir is located in Northwest Morgan County, 3 miles southwest of Ashland off of Route 123 and Collins Road, 21 miles northwest of Springfield.
Description:
The Ashland Old Reservoir is owned by the Village of Ashland. The Village of Ashland entered into a formal Cooperative Management Agreement with IDNR in 1988. The lake is 5 acres and has a maximum depth of approximately 15 feet. Boats are not allowed. The entire shoreline is accessible to bank fishing.

Other species present in this lake include Common Carp and Yellow Bullhead.
